Afterhours, 2004

The idea for this piece came to me while mopping my kitchen floor. Built into it are different ideas about labor and productivity. On the one hand, labor that has no object—the labor of maintenance—on the other, labor focused on tangible, lasting outcomes.

Afterhours is my attempt to reconcile these divergent concepts into an object that is at once unique and easily overlooked, something that only registers fully on second take. Working within the formal language of the four upturned, bentwood chairs, I extended and interconnected the legs to create a complex set of symmetrical curved lines that subvert the original function of the chairs, suspending them in a perpetual holding pattern.
