Moiré for Office & Gallery 2005
I created this site-specific work for an exhibition entitled Practice Makes Perfect: Bay Area Conceptual Craft—replacing the drywall separating Southern Exposure’s offices from their exhibition space with densely perforated panels. This allowed the two formerly distinct spaces to be visually traversed: gallery goers had a partial view of the daily operations of the gallery while staff could watch as visitors experienced the exhibition. Additionally a moiré effect could be created between the offset patterns by keeping one’s eyes fixed on the wall while moving around it. For me the piece is as much about the intermediary role of art as it is about the architecture that shapes our experience of it.
