Co-blique Strategies 2016

Based on Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt’s Oblique Strategies, this deck of cards is the result of a project I initiated with students in Sierra Nevada College’s MFA-IA program. The prompts (instructions, advice, questions) printed on the cards and intended to aid those struggling with the creative process were solicited from students, faculty, visiting artists and others involved with the SNC graduate program. The contributions were collectively selected and edited for inclusion in the deck by the students and me.

The completed deck consists of 93 individual prompts and like its predecessor “…can be used as a pack (a set of possibilities being continuously reviewed in the mind) or by drawing a single card from the shuffled pack when a dilemma occurs in a working situation. In this case the card is trusted even if its appropriateness is quite unclear. They are not final, as new ideas will present themselves, and others will become self-evident.” Four blank cards are included, on which one can write additional strategies.
